Softwares I use on Debian

Yes, this is my first blog entry for debian. Debian is a distribution of GNU Linux. Its official website is at http://www.debian.org/. Feel free to find out more about it.

This entry is a full list of softwares that I use on Debian, to perform my daily activities.

1. Desktop Environment.
KDE is my first choice. Handy file types support, easy to use configuration, wonderful support. The best desktop environment on linux in my opinion.

2. Package Manager.
Softwares in Linux, are often distributed in package. For easier download, installation and maintenance. Each distribution of Linux has its own naming of these packages. In Debian, these softwares come in .deb files. A package manager is a software that manages the downloads, installations, updates and upgrades for these software packages. My favorite package manager would be Synaptic, a GUI package manager.

3. Web Browser
Nothing other than almighty Mozilla Firefox. Alternatively, I have also Opera installed just in case I need test some web visuals.

4. Mp3 Player
AmaroK, fully integrated with KDE. For drag and drop file selection, to playlist manipulation, AmaroK does its best for me. Alternatively, I have also XMMS installed. XMMS was my favorite back in Red Hat days, but due to its poor multi-bytes characters supports(ID3tag with chinese words), I gave it up.

5. Text Editor
Kate, my favorite text editor. Deals with my needs with source code editing, full features with line numbers, syntax highlighting, advanced find and replace and many more. A must have for webmasters or programmers.

6. Image Editor
Gimp. I’m not very pro in image though, this program handles most of my needs for image resizing, file type saving, layering, brightness/contrast adjust and many more. Always the first choice in Linux.

7. Multimedia
For multimedia playback such as movie files(avi, wmv, rmvb, asf), I use Xine. It can also handle DVD playback.

8. Internet Messenger
Gaim. Multi-protocol support, ICQ, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, IRC and many more. Alternatively, Kopete from KDE team also does the same job.

9. Mail Client
Mozilla Thunderbird. Trust everything from Mozilla, that’s what I believe. Thunderbird works the same like outlook express, yet a simpler interface and configuration.

10. FTP program
gFTP. Webmasters, this is all you need for ftp uploading.

11. Input Method program
Skim. A KDE frontend for scim-im. I basically use it for chinese text input.(pinyin)

Did I miss out anything? Please let me know if you need anymore information.
