Setting 1280X1024 resolution for my KDE desktop.

Again, a debian entry, I’m so in love with debian. This entry is about how I’ve made my KDE desktop in 1280×1024 resolution, with 75hz refresh rate. Hopefully this will help someone in need.

This is my machine’s specs.

  • Debian Unstable
  • Kernel 2.6.17-2-686
  • KDE 3.5.4
  • xserver-xorg 1:7.0.23
  • nvidia-glx 1.0.8774-3(for nvidia display card)
  • Monitor : Samsung Syncmaster 172x

If you haven’t installed nvidia driver, please refer to this post. Nvidia driver is compulsory if you want your nvidia card to function at its best, same goes to ATI cards.

You need to edit your xorg config file which located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf by default.

Codes:

Section ”Monitor”
        Identifier   ”Generic Monitor”
        HorizSync    28.0 - 49.0
        VertRefresh  43.0 - 72.0
        Option      ”DPMS”
EndSection

This is your monitor section. You need to set HorizSync and VertRefresh values according to your monitor’s specs. Try checking at the manufacturer’s website.

Codes:

Section ”Screen”
        Identifier ”Default Screen”
        Device     ”Nvdia FX5500″
        Monitor    ”Generic Monitor”
        DefaultDepth     24
        SubSection ”Display”
                Depth     24
                Modes   ”1280×1024″ ”1152×864″ ”1024×768″ ”800×600″ ”640×480″
        EndSubSection
EndSection

In your Screen section, you should have several subsection for different color depth, adding the resolution values in Modes like above will make KDE recognize your selection. Depends on your DefaultDepth value, I only made changes to subsection of Depth 24.

After made changes to your xorg.conf, restart your xserver. A machine reboot would be ideal as the restart of xserver didn’t fully apply the changes for me. Now in your KDE desktop, the resolution should be set at 1280×1024 with the highest refresh rate possible. You can adjust your screen with KRandRtray, which can be found in Kmenu -> System -> Screen Resize & Rotate.

This is how I made the changes. 1280×1024 is the highest resolution my monitor can support. Please share with me if you have any interesting experience about tweak your screen.
