Throttled Streamyx “broadband” connection
I’m back, after a few crazy weeks with projects. Sad to tell, i’m back with a very bad news. To me, and to all the P2P users in Malaysia. If you use BitTorrent, eMule, DC++, IRC, Limeware or any other Peer-To-Peer file sharing softwares, this is the end of it. No more high speed download for you.
TMNET has been performing a major upgrade nation wide, most of us have been experiencing connection problem in the past few weeks, or months. It is funny that I still remember their auto responding voice message when calling their hotline number. “We are performing a series of upgrade, in order to serve you better.” or some sort. Yeah right, to serve us better.
I personally use BitTorrent quite frequently, to collect various Linux distributions’ ISO files. Here’s one for example, if you are interested in Debian. For a torrent with more than 1000 available seeds, I’m getting 10Kb/s download speed maximum, using Azureus BitTorrent client. How sad is that, when downloading at 1Mb/s full speed is a past tense.
I did some fact findings as usual, below are my results.
- TMNet limits P2P Bandwidth
Check this list, this forum thread, and this blog entry. Credits go to their respective owners. - It is some sort of Traffic Shaping mechanism
Please take note , this time it is not about blocking specific ports of P2P usage. It is Traffic Shaping. Which means, before this, you can switch your software’s incoming and outgoing listening ports at your choice, in order to achive higher download/upload speed for the software. Now, it does not work, you can only download/upload at their given/allowed/limited/throttled speed. I’m not sure whether how can this mechanism be implemented, hardware or software, they sure invested some bucks for this. - Web browsing is smooth, media streaming speed is throttled
Normal usage on web browsing is smooth, only when come streaming sites like metacafe and youtube, the video download speed is unacceptable. Media streaming bandwidth is also being throttled.
This is it, there goes the “UNLIMITED” internet connection. I used to whine a lot about streamyx connection, almost became a habit. But hey, I guess it’s time to stop, I won’t complain anymore. Just hope that there’s going to be alternative ISP sooner in this country.
