Debian and HP PSC 1400 All-In-One Series How-To.

Friday, November 24th, 2006

I’ve just got a HP PSC 1400 All-In-One Series from a friend. This device is so called “All-In-One”, but can only photo-copy, print and scan. It took me sometime to make it work in my KDE desktop. So here I am again, to share some tips with you guys.

PREPARING

First, get its power on, connect it to your machine’s USB hub. Try to verify that your machine is able to detect it by various approaches.

  1. lsusb, this command should print a block of output depending on your USB usage.

    Bus 002 Device 006: ID 03f0:4d11 Hewlett-Packard

This is the line, the device is detected.

  2. dmesg, this command will print a load of output. Look at the bottom part. You will find something similar to this.

usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 6 usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0×03F0 pid 0×4D11

Using Tor and Privoxy in Firefox Web Browser

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Tor(The Onion Router) is a toolset to improve your anonymity online. My main purpose here, is to surf websites that are banned by my ISP, or websites that banned my ISP. Its concept might sound a lot complicated, but getting it to work was just easy on my Debian box.

To start, you’ll need to install these packages in unstable pool.

  1. tor
  2. privoxy

After installing these 2 packages, using this firefox extension will set your firefox ready. You need to restart your browser in order for the extension to work. Here’s a screenshot of torbutton, it should appear on right part of status bar.

Firefox Extensions: StumbleUpon and SearchStatus toolbars.

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Okay, I was wrong. I’ve always thought that toolbars in web browsers are waste of space, and most toolbars are advertisement related. I was very wrong about this. I’ve came across these two very useful firefox extensions, and I’d like to share with you guys.

  1. StumbleUpon
This is a must to have, if you are very into Internet browsing. During installation, you get to choose your favorite topics. These topics will be available in your browser’s toolbar. After you’ve selected the topic of your choice, and click on “Stumble!“, all the pages with related topic ranked by many others will pop up to you instantly. It’s a very useful tool, especially you want some random quality stuffs to read. You can start installing from here. Below is a screenshot of my firefox browser toolbar.
