Antivirus, and Windows Live Messenger.

I’ve been using my laptop for quite some time, not much changes since the last time I used Windows XP Pro. This post is actually inspired by the expiry of subscription of Norton Antivirus 2004 that came along with this laptop. This post is also dedicated to my dear sister Stella, she’s got redundant problems maintaining her own machine.

Okay, so my long lasting situation is, no extra $ for the softwares. Since the Norton Antivirus 2004 is expiring, and according to the message I have to get the new subscription key from a local vendor, if only I know who is that. So forget it, I chose to completely remove it from the system. Now damn, here comes the all-knowing magic balloon, saying that my computer might be at risk without a antivirus program.

Now look at these two products, limited features, but more than enough for a single home user. Solutions don’t always cost you money, if you know how. This post is no way affiliated with the following vendors, this is just my gratitude to them, for releasing quality products under Free-Software license.

avast! 4 Home Edition
Avast Home Edition.

Avast series is developed by ALWIL Software a.s., a Czech-based software company. They are offering various virus protection products for different platforms, you can check their site at http://www.avast.com/. For now I am getting the Free version, which is avast! 4 Home Edition, located here.

Avira is a Germany company, mainly providing protection softwares for various platforms. Their site is at http://www.avira.com/. Free version of AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is available here.

The most cheerful fact is, both of these vendors have got antivirus versions that support Linux. Please feel free to try those out.

Now what’s wrong with Windows Live Messenger? The thing is, I found out that after the removal of Norton Antivirus, whenever a file transfer is completed in Windows Live Messenger, it kept throwing error message that “Virus scanning cannot be completed”. So in the Messenger, Tools -> Option -> File Transfer
Live Msger File Transfer
You need to update the path to the newly installed antivuirus executable file. Isn’t hard at all, or you prefer to disable the file scanning option if you are cautious enough.
