As they’ve planned, any new feature of PHP will be made available to version 5.2 and above only. PHP 4 however, will still receive critical update until late 2008.
Frequently maintained projects like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, phpMyAdmin, PEAR, and phpBB shouldn’t be affected by this decision. This will mostly affect countless of web hosts out there, who serve millions of custom-made php scripts. This will be a very big headache.
