Softwares I use on Debian

Yes, this is my first blog entry for debian. Debian is a distribution of GNU Linux. Its official website is at http://www.debian.org/. Feel free to find out more about it.

This entry is a full list of softwares that I use on Debian, to perform my daily activities.

1. Desktop Environment.
KDE is my first choice. Handy file types support, easy to use configuration, wonderful support. The best desktop environment on linux in my opinion.

2. Package Manager.
Softwares in Linux, are often distributed in package. For easier download, installation and maintenance. Each distribution of Linux has its own naming of these packages. In Debian, these softwares come in .deb files. A package manager is a software that manages the downloads, installations, updates and upgrades for these software packages. My favorite package manager would be Synaptic, a GUI package manager.

73lab.com

This dude is a godsend. I’m not bluffing you, he is. All his art works are done by using “The Gimp“, a GNU image manipulation program on linux. He has a frequently updated site about all this works, and A LOT of freebies like wallpapers, E-cards, and handphone themes. No point reading what I write about him, you definitely have to check out his site at :

http://www.73lab.com/

These are the credits I wish to give to him.

  • For his inspiration.
I never thought Linux can be so beautiful and colorful, until I saw his KDE splash when I first using Redhat 9. Now I’ve switched to Debian, and happily stick with it. Still, his wallpapers are on my desktop all these years. If he can use linux platform to produce such beautiful and amazing works, I surely can use it too for my codes and writings. This is how his works inspired me, or maybe you are the next one.
  • For his continuous contribution.
His effort in promoting Gimp sets an huge example to the open source community. A total of 98MB free wallpapers in tarball, I’ve lost count of the total amount, all produced in Gimp. His posts on the site always include the link to gimp official site. This is the spirit of open source world, he’s definitely one of the pioneers.

Again, Hat off to Mr. Ayo with full respect. His full name is Alexis Younes.
