Get the real facts, Microsoft.

If you have read my previous post “Microsoft is Tripping“, you should more or less getting the idea that Microsoft is seeing Open Source Software as its No.1 threat in the market. Until now I have not heard any news about the infringement case, most likely they’ve learned the fact that they do not have a case unless they are willing to publish the “possible” alleged patents.

Today, when I stumbled upon this stunning page of Microsoft, I can’t help but to share it with all of you. I’m not going to make the link active here, please copy and paste if you may.

Open Source on Windows: GNU Image Manipulation Program(GIMP)

I’ve been working on my laptop ever since the wireless network is installed. I love to bring my laptop here and there in the house, especially to living room and dining table, where I can join my parents for a little chit-chatting.

This laptop runs a genuine Windows XP Professional. I had to search for some favorite programs which I’ve been using on my Debian desktop. GIMP, an image manipulation program which I’ve been using for years, is available for Windows. Windows package is available here. Please be informed that you will need GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment in order to run GIMP, GTK+2 installer is also available in the same page.

File sharing on Debian

Okay here’s how file sharing done on my debian box.(Cheers, if you are surrounded by Windows machines, just like me).

My LAN setup - One ADSL router modem connected to a 8-ports switch, and every single machine connects to the switch. Ideal for LAN games, files/printers sharing, and Internet connection sharing.

Comparing to Windows, Linux offers more details for users to tweak around, for better security and performance. Which, all these are not in my concern. I just want to share files to my friends, and copy some goodies from them too!

Softwares I use on Debian

Yes, this is my first blog entry for debian. Debian is a distribution of GNU Linux. Its official website is at http://www.debian.org/. Feel free to find out more about it.

This entry is a full list of softwares that I use on Debian, to perform my daily activities.

1. Desktop Environment.
KDE is my first choice. Handy file types support, easy to use configuration, wonderful support. The best desktop environment on linux in my opinion.

2. Package Manager.
Softwares in Linux, are often distributed in package. For easier download, installation and maintenance. Each distribution of Linux has its own naming of these packages. In Debian, these softwares come in .deb files. A package manager is a software that manages the downloads, installations, updates and upgrades for these software packages. My favorite package manager would be Synaptic, a GUI package manager.
